Whoever said you need shiny metals to achieve a good design and build quality? On its left edge is a Micro-USB port and a volume rocker. Is It Your Type? It could also use a higher definition screen, but you are still getting much more than what you paid for. The distortion could be mitigated a bit by turning down the volume.

Some images look a little hazy and you can especially tell the low resolution when viewing text. Colors are vibrant and well saturated. Viewing angles are great and I noticed close to no washing out or darkening when viewing from extreme perspectives.

It is also bright enough to comfortably use under direct sunlight. At the end of the day, if you are a display buff, this one might be a bit underwhelming, but if you are just looking for a bright, large display that gets the job done, the X 4 handles this quite nicely.

The ZTE Grand X 4 one-upped its predecessor by upgrading to the Snapdragon series, as opposed to sticking with the series. The Grand X 4 now sports a Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset, with four cores clocked at 1. This makes for a pretty good experience.

Keep in mind lower-end processors are no longer as limited as they once were. This phone can handle its own pretty well. Apps open quickly and I never noticed any significant lag or real slow-downs during casual usage.

When it came to running all my apps, for the most part, it handled everything I threw at it without any major issues. I was not able to run Shadowgun, and Real Racing had plenty of stutters.

More casual games worked just fine, though. The UI of course is super responsive. Remember when cheap phones took like 3 seconds just to go from homepage to homepage? Those days are long gone! While most phones in this price range strip the phone of all cool features in existence, it seems the ZTE Grand X 4 is skimping out on very little.

For starters, the phone does come with a fingerprint reader, as previously mentioned. And a very good one, at that. It is fast and only failed to recognize my fingerprint a couple times. While most budget phones strip the phone of all cool features, the ZTE Grand X 4 is skimping out on very little.

Also packed inside is 16 GB of internal flash storage. The only significant feature missing is NFC, really, but we know not many of you care for that anyways. In good ZTE fashion, the software is pretty much stock Android with some slight yet helpful additions.

The most obvious difference will be on the notification area, which does look rather unique. Pulling down the notification area will display your notifications of course brightness options and 4 toggles you can customize to your liking.

These can also be edited, by the way. It is a simple interface, which we know is something the US market loves. The closer to stock Android, the better, right? Cameras on low-end phones tend to be horrible, a trend ZTE has been wanting to change.

Now, I am not saying this is a phenomenal camera phone, but it can take some decent shots. I was especially surprised by the manual mode in the included app. On its left edge is a Micro-USB port and a volume rocker. Both the volume and power keys bulge out ever so slightly from the surface, making them easy to feel for and comfortable to press.

The back houses a 5-megapixel camera lens and flash, which are set off in a wide, glossy black oval finish. A small audio grille rests on the bottom-right corner. Using a small indentation on the bottom edge, you can pry off the back plate to access the removable 2,mAh battery, SIM card and microSD card, which is expandable up to 32GB.

The screen can also be unresponsive to the touch, and on occasion, it required several taps or swipes of my finger to register an action. Due to its narrow viewing angle, the screen can appear washed out when you tilt it, and it becomes difficult to view the display.

Above the touchscreen is a low-res 1-megapixel shooter and an in-ear speaker. Below are three hot keys for Back, Home and Menu that light up when in use. To launch Google Now and recent apps, long-press the Home and Menu keys, respectively.

Basic task managing apps that are baked-in include native browser and email clients, a calendar, a calculator, a notepad, a clock with alarm and stopwatch functions, a news and weather app, video and music players, a sound recorder and a voice dialer.

Cricket threw in some of its preloaded apps too. TouchPal X activates an optional keyboard and text-inserting function, KingSoft Offices is a mobile office suite, and Mi-EasyAccess allows you change the app shortcuts on your lockscreen.

The Grand X does include Bluetooth 4. Camera quality for the 5-megapixel camera was passable, but only just. It also takes an average of 4.

Resolution is pixels per inch, which is adequate, though not nearly as sharp as the p Max 2 ppi. That said, viewing angles are decent. It also gets impressively bright, making it easy to see outdoors. Additional connectivity options include 2.

Call quality is mediocre. Voices can sound harsh and robotic, with occasional crackling that sometimes renders bits of conversation inaudible. The rear speaker is tinny and not loud enough to hear outdoors.

Frame rates slow to a crawl and controls are too unresponsive to be playable. On the bright side, battery life is excellent. Despite its large, bright display, the phone clocked 7 hours, 22 minutes in our rundown test, in which we stream full-screen video over LTE at maximum brightness.

Visit manufacturer site for details. Sporting a 5-inch display, a 5-megapixel camera and a dual-core processor, the ZTE Grand X is a perfect example of a middle-of-the-road phone that is reliable and affordable.

The carrier itself has plenty of more alternatives like the HTC Desire and the Motorola Moto G , which offer a smoother and faster user experience for the same low cost.

The volume toggle resembles two screen lock buttons stuck together, but with a smooth texture. I wish the volume toggle were a little bit longer, which might make it easier to tell up from down.

I sometime found myself raising the volume when I meant to lower it and vice versa. That said, travel and feedback is quite good. The card tray is slotted into the left edge of the phone. The USB-C ecosystem is finally beginning to pick up a bit of steam, but it still may be harder for you to find cables and other accessories to work with the Grand X 4.

I like the treatment of the rear panel. The camera, flash, and fingerprint sensor are a finely balanced trio of elements. The camera module and fingerprint sensor are small round circles rimmed in chrome, which helps them stand out.

The camera module is raised perhaps one millimeter, while the fingerprint sensor is indented perhap one millimeter. You can easily tell them apart by feel. That might be a dealbreaker for some. Words and icons are noticeably less sharp than on higher-end phones with 5.

Color representation is accurate, and viewing angles are decent for this type of screen. I was able to consistently connect all calls, even under poor signal conditions, on the first dial.

The phone held onto calls firmly at highway speeds. Data performance was good enough to handle low-key social networks such as Instagram and Twitter, but streaming YouTube and Spotify content via LTE was sometimes choppy.

The Grand X 4 is a middling voice phone. I did have to keep the volume set all the way up at all times. Clarity is a bit of a different story. The earpiece produces choppy sound, for sure, especially when you crank the volume.

People I spoke to through the Grand X 4 said I sounded "broken up. The speakerphone takes things down a step. This means calls are harder to understand all around. The distortion could be mitigated a bit by turning down the volume.

Sadly, that makes calls all but unhearable. The Grand X 4 stuffs a good-sized 3, mAh battery into its shell.

In general, photos look sharp, and images are clear. However, colors appear muted, and dark hues are even harder to discern from one another.

For more on photo quality, be sure to click on each picture below to see them at their full resolution. Better cameras, faster performance and new AR apps. And this one still has the home button. Compare These Samsung Galaxy Note 8.

We had no problem getting the phone to last through the day. Video recording p at 30fps is decent, but has the same struggles with low-light conditions. The 5-megapixel front camera is fine for selfies, though shots look ovely soft even after you disable the Beautification mode.

The Grand X 4 comes running the dated Android 6. A hefty amount of bloatware comes with the phone.

No periodic discharge is needed and charging can be done at random. Despite its large, bright display, the phone clocked 7 hours, 22 minutes in our rundown test, in which we stream full-screen video over LTE at maximum brightness. Overall, the phone feels pretty good. Some chrome-colored accents help complete the appearance by throwing in a hint of eye-catching sparkle. I did have to keep the volume set all the way up at all times. And a very good one, at that.
